Mercury
Mercury is a main character in the Netflix Original, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. Mercury is an extremely powerful and feared Blood Witch. Known for being a gatekeeper of blood for both Blood Witch and Fairborn families alike, bargaining with Mercury always comes at a price.
She is a close friend, and mother figure to Gabriel.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Assisting Nathan and Esmie[edit | edit source]
Mercury is first mentioned by Esmie as Nathan's seventeenth birthday quickly approaches. With the prospect of being taken by the Fairborn Council arises, Esmie hands Nathan a spell to cast and, although reluctantly, explains that it is the contact information for a witch named Mercury, who gave her the details should she ever need Mercury's assistance in the future. Presumably, then, the two worked together in the past or had some interaction, although this is never explained.
Esmie begins to brew a potion and when Nathan casts the spell, Mercury is able to possess Esmie and talk with Nathan directly. Mercury explains that she can help Nathan and that he shouldn't be afraid of his possible status as a Blood Witch, and that should he need refuge from the Fairborn Council, he should seek her out. With this, she uses a hunting knife to inscribe symbols on the palm of his hand, citing that it is a map to find her.
Mercury later uses the same possession ability to communicate with Gabriel, tasking him to seek out Nathan and bring him to her safetly so that he can get his blood and complete his coming-of-age ceremony without delay as his birthday fast approaches.
Encounter with Gabriel[edit | edit source]
Eventually, Gabriel reaches Mercury's home and attempts to sneak into her vault. In the vault, there are several vials of blood, one from each of the witch families. Mercury is annoyed and dissapointed that Gabriel has failed to bring her Nathan, but he tells her that he needs the blood to give to Nathan so that he can complete the ceremony. Much to his dismay, however, Mercury uses one of Gabriel's own tricks on him, and wipes his memory of Nathan.
Gabriel is eventually able to remember Nathan and the connection they had, however, and seeks out the blood once more. He is able to attain the blood but is barely able to flee from Mercury who realises what he is up to and tries to attack him for double-crossing her. Gabriel is able to get out safetly, however, using one of the Cuts in Mercury's house.
Helping Jessica[edit | edit source]
When a second massacre happens at Wolfhagen, this time at the hands of Soul O'Brien, Jessica is left as one of the only surviving members of the attack. She enters a field and in the middle, she finds a Cut that she enters without realising what it is. This transports her to Mercury's house, where she finds Mercury waiting for her on the sofa. Jessica asks if Mercury can help her in fixing her powers, which were badly damanged in a confrontation with Annalise O'Brien. Mercury cites that she cannot, but can help her get revenge for the damage done.
Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
Little is known about Mercury's active power, other than the fact that she was able to move at fast speeds and her form shifted slightly whilst attempting to attack Gabriel. Outside of this, however, Mercury was a powerful and feared Blood Witch. She held the blood of each of the witch families in a secure vault, should the need arise that a witch needed the blood to complete their coming-of-age ceremony and recieve their powers.
Furthermore, she was also seemingly adept at the management — and possible creation — of Cuts; Cuts were doorways between two locations that allowed the user to transport themselves there simply by entering through them. Mercury was seemingly able to create a Cut for Jessica Byrn to enter her home from the middle of a field, wheras Gabriel and Nathan had to seek out the already created Cuts in order to find Mercury.
Mercury also seemed to be a renowned witch within the Blood and Fairborn community alike, and most witches seemed to at least have some knowledge of her. This reach was great enough that Gabriel's parents felt that the only safe place for him was with Mercury. Similarly, she had numerous Blood Witches at her beckon call working under her on various tasks. Her reach was so influential that even Fairborn Witches such as Esmie knew about her and were given a way to contact her.
It is possible that Mercury was also a talented Alchemist aside from her active ability, and she showed proficiency in the art of brewing and using potions.[1]

- Whilst it is not stated that Mercury is an Alchemist, she was adept in potion making and had the ability to brew numerous potions — specifically, she was able to wipe the mind of Gabriel using a potion he frequently would use.
